Bagaimana Menulis Feature?

MENULIS FEATURE, HARUS DIAWALI MENCOBA

Feature, secara sederhana sering diartikan sebagai berita kisah. Ada pula yang menyebut tulisan kreatif. Model penulisan berita seperti itu banyak dijumpai dalam surat kabar, dan terutama tabloid atau majalah. Ciri sederhana feature adalah gaya tuangannya yang lebih longgar dibanding penulisan straight-news. Bahasanya tidak kaku, adakalanya bernuansa sastra.

Ada beberapa jenis feature, diantaranya ; bright, sidebar, profile, project profile, news feature, service feature, interview, string of pearl, narative feature, dan comprehensive news feature,.

Comprehensive news feature sendiri adalah penulisan feature dengan bahan kajian mendalam, dengan dukungan investigasi. Investigasi bisa dari lapangan, riset pustaka maupun wawancara pakar atau sumber berita yang punya kaitan langsung (dekat dengan persoalan).

Setiap tulisan feature yang baik mesti mengandung fokus, anecdotes, drama, purpose, organization, detail. Fokus adalah sumbu panjaran alur cerita. Feature yang bagus punya alur cerita yang terfokus jelas dan terjaga, tidak melenceng kesana-kemari. Anecdotes adalah penulisan tuturan tentang pengalaman sumber berita atau saksi peristiwa berkaitan dengan dengan pokok soal yang hendak ditulis.

Anecdotes punya fungsi memperkuat dan menghidupkan alur serta tema tulisan. Pencantumannya dalam tulisan bisa berupa tuturan langsung maupun tak langsung. Drama, adalah keruntutan penjelasan alur cerita. Purpose; adalah tujuan penulisan. Apa esensi bagi pembaca.Untuk menjawab pertanyaan ‘what is the significance of the feature (article)’.

Organization adalah koherensi atau logika cerita. Termasuk dalam hal ini pemilihan nara sumber serta ketepatan penempatan tuturan atau statement narasumber. Terakhir adalah detail, adalah ketelitian atau presisi dalam merinci, menuliskan, dan mengintepretasikan data atau fakta.

Apa bekal untuk menulis feature? Sebagaimana menulis berita straight-news, menulis feature butuh kemampuan mengendus berita. Pertama, jadilah pendengar, pengamat, dan pencatat yang baik. Ingat, jangan mendebat narasumber ketika narasumber salah menjawab pertanyaan. Untuk menghindari kesalahan jawaban dari narasumber, usahakan dengan pertanyaan ulang atau penjelasan halus.

Kedua, kumpulkan data atau fakta sebanyak mungkin. Tentukan fokus penulisan dengan pilihan angle yang paling menarik. Yang khas dan tidak membebek. Kemudian seleksi data sesuai dengan pilihan angle atau fokus yang akan kita tulis.

Asah kemampuan menuangkan ide dengan presisi bahasa segar, pilihan diksi dan kalimat setepat mungkin. Ingat, menulis feature jauh berbeda dengan menulis skripsi. Pilih bahasa ringkas, jelas dan tidak kaku. Perkaya kemampuan kosakata. Hal ini bisa diasah lewat membaca bahan bacaan apapun.

Sesudah bekal cukup, pilih format penulisan. Secara umum format tulisan feature tak jauh berbeda dengan straight-news. Terdiri dari judul, lead, isi, penjelasan isi, dan ending. Kelima unsur itu harus memiliki korelasi, saling mendukung. Judul sebaiknya ringkas, menarik, dan mewakili tema tulisan.

Independent edisi 2001 yang mengupas tentang derita masyarakat Aceh, misalnya, menulis dengan judul; Aceh, Sejarahmu Tertulis Dengan Darah. Kemudian, Tempo pernah membuat laporan investigasi Aceh dengan judul: Yang Berduka di Pangkuan Pertiwi. Kompas juga pernah menurunkan feature tentang gagalnya perundingan damai Israel – Palestina lewat judul Dan Kuncup Zaitun pun Enggan Bersemi. Begitulah, judul punya andil besar dalam menarik minat baca.

Jika sebuah tulisan diibaratkan seorang gadis, judul adalah mahkota atau rambut, lead adalah wajah. Wajah cantik, umumnya punya daya pikat, menumbuhkan kesan pertama. Ingat bahasa iklan: kesan pertama begitu mempesona, selanjutnya terserah Anda. Makin bagus lead, makin merangsang pembaca untuk menelusuri ‘lekuk-lekuk tulisan selanjutnya’.

Setelah judul, buatlah lead yang juga menarik. Lead atau pembuka, juga harus singkat padat dan sesuai tema. Lead punya fungsi sebagai magnet awal sebuah tulisan. Artinya, daya tarik tulisan juga sangat bergantung pada kemampuan jurnalis menyajikan lead. Penguasaaan bahasa, termasuk peribahasa maupun majas sangat mendukung pembuatan lead yang bagus.

Setelah lead, yang tak kalah pentingnya adalah isi. Bagian ini merupakan substansi. Kalau lead ibarat wajah, isi adalah citra, kualitas sekaligus eksistensi ‘tubuh’ itu sendiri. Wajah cantik, tidak akan berarti apa-apa tanpa kualitas dalam diri, itu ibaratnya.

Begitu pula halnya sebuah news-feature, kualitasnya ditentukan isi. Kualitas (presisi) data, fakta, kredibilitas narasumber dan cara penyajian menopang kualitas tulisan fature. Demikian pula halnya penjelasan isi, bermanfaat untuk memuluskan pemahaman pembaca.

Ending, nah ini yang juga tak kalah besar peranannya dalam membangun feature. Bagian ini, jika dibuat secara bagus akan mampu memberikan jawaban pada purpose, pada tujuan ditulisnya feature. Empati penulis atau jurnalis bisa dititipkan pada bagian ini. Ending yang bagus, acapkali bisa membangkitkan rasa penasaran pembaca.

Akhirnya, untuk bisa menulis feature tak cukup hanya dengan pelatihan, apalagi makalah yang super singkat ini. Butuh proses panjang dan yang paling penting adalah terus mencoba. Pelatihan hanyalah medium pemacu semangat. Tanpa mencoba dan mencoba, kemampuan menulis tidak akan pernah terwujud. Selamat mencoba.

LAPORAN INVESTIGASI

Investigative dan interpretive reporting masuk dalam kategori comprehensive reporting. Ken Metzler dalam buku Newsgathering mendefinisikan Investigative reporting adalah comprehensive reporting in depth, usually on wrong doing. Sedangkan interpretive reporting is a reporting that seeks meaning beyond superficial reports of events.

Model reportase semacam itu pertamakali muncul di Amerika pada pertengahan tahun 60-an. Kemunculannya dilatari keprihatinan atas kemerosotan citra jurnalis, yang waktu itu cenderung mengumbar berita sensasi. Faktor lain yang juga mendasari adalah kondisi sosial politik yang tidak sehat; korupsi dan kolusi serta kelicikan para pengusaha merajalela hampir di setiap meja birokrasi.

November 1969 muncul berita investigasi yang cukup menggegerkan kalangan militer AS. Isinya mengungkap kejahatan tentara AS di Vietnam. Pembantaian ribuan warga sipil vietnam oleh serdadu Amerika itu dikupas tuntas oleh Seymour Herst, mantan reporter Associated Press, dengan gaya penulisan elegan, jauh dari sensasi. Tahun 1973, Herst juga membuat berita cemerlang yang mengungkap upaya menutup skandal Watergate yang melibatkan Presiden Nixon.

Herst, yang saat itu bekerja untuk New York Times, berhasil mengorek keterangan dari empat saksi yang dibayar untuk melakukan pekerjaan itu. Prestasi Herst terulang lagi ketika dia kembali sukses mengungkap skandal CIA yang secara melanggar hukum memata-matai warga negara AS sendiri di dalam negeri. Tulisan terakhir ini dibuat pada bulan Desember 1974.

Prestasi gemilang Herst memacu semangat jurnalis lainnya. Skandal Watergate menjadi lahan berita empuk mereka. Lengsernya Nixon dari kursi kepresidenan pada tahun 1974, tak lepas dari berita investigasi yang dibuat Robert Woodward dan Carl Bernstein. Keduanya jurnalis untuk Washington Post. Keberhasilan mengungkap kasus tersembunyi itulah yang kemudian berhasil mendongkrak citra jurnalis (investigator).

Itulah sekilas gambaran munculnya trend reportase model investigasi. Disitu tampak, pada umumnya, kasus-kasus yang digarap memiliki eskalasi besar. Perlu dicatat, bahwa dalam melakukan reportase investigasi, mereka juga melibatkan kemampuan interpretive reporting. Dan tentu saja tingkat kesulitannya pun besar pula. Di Indonesia, greget reportase investigasi maupun interpretive masih rendah, meskipun peristiwa atau kasus besar melimpah. Boleh jadi karena kultur politik masa Orde Baru hingga masa transisi ini, tidak atau kurang menunjang kemampuan untuk melakukan itu.

Yang menarik, selama ini kerja investigasi kasus-kasus besar di negeri kita justru dilakukan oleh lembaga atau individu non-jurnalis. Kontras misalnya, cukup dikenal prestasinya dalam melakukan investigasi terhadap korban kekerasan. Juga ICW yang mengkhususkan pada kasus-kasus korupsi. Ini mestinya patut menjadi cermin bagi para jurnalis. Ingat kasus penculikan aktivis dan kasus korupsi yang melibatkan para petinggi pemerintah, kedua lembaga non-pers itulah yang paling besar andilnya mengungkap.

Kemudian, apa dan bagaimana investigative maupun interpretive reporting itu? Seperti terurai di awal tulisan ini, investigative reporting atau reportase investigasi adalah reportase atau penggalian berita mendalam dengan mencari sekomplet mungkin sumber berita. Biasanya, kasus yang diinvestigasi adalah kasus tersembunyi atau yang sengaja disembunyikan.

Dalam melakukan reportase seperti itu, informasi atau data tidak sekadar didapat, melainkan harus diburu, tidak lagi sekadar di-cek dan ri-cek, melainkan di-multicek. Kemudian dirangkai, disusun, dicocok-cocokkan sampai membentuk gambaran cerita utuh dari peristiwa tersembunyi. Dalam proses pencocokan dan penarikan simpul gambaran peristiwa itulah kemampuan interpretive diperlukan.

Ada tiga hal yang perlu dipegang teguh seorang investigator maupun interpretor, yakni ‘moral’, daya endus atau kecerdasan sosial, dan teknik reportase. Yang dimaksud moral disini adalah stamina batin : kesabaran tinggi, keyakinan, dan realisme dalam memilih sumber, memburu informasi, menimbang benar tidaknya informasi, menulis berita, sampai pada memperkirakan dampak tulisannya (David Anderson, dalam Investigative Reporting – sebagaimana dikutip Parakitri Simbolon).

Kemudian yang dimaksud daya endus adalah kemampuan menggali berita dan bukan mendapatkan berita. Karena harus menggali hal-hal tersembunyi,‘kecerdasan sosial’ ini sangat dibutuhkan dan akan menentukan hasil akhirnya. Dengan kemampuan endus, peristiwa yang bakal terjadi dapat tertangkap melalui fakta-fakta yang ada (interpretive). Kemampuan mengendus berita juga termasuk dalam hal mencari narasumber yang tepat dan menuliskannya.

Yang terakhir adalah penguasaan teknik investigasi. Menyangkut teknis, sebenarnya banyak macamnya. Namun secara garis besar kami cantumkan 9 macam :

Pertama, menjaring dan memanfaatkan informasi sekecil apapun. Disini ketrampilan mencatat dan mendata informasi diperlukan. Baik yang didengar maupun dilihat.
Kedua, menghubungi sumber awal sebanyak-banyaknya.
Ketiga, menimbang nilai berita. Pilih data atau informasi mana yang sesuai dan akurat dengan fenomena atau kasus yang tengah diinvestigasi.
Keempat, menentukan sumber utama informasi. Pilih orang atau narasumber yang kapable dan dekat kaitannya dengan kasus.
Kelima, terus mendekati sumber utama. Usahakan dengan cara apapun agar selalu dekat dengan sumber informasi utama ini. Pantau terus perkembangan informasinya.
Keenam, sabar dan jangan mendebat sumber, meskipun sumber tersebut salah komentar. Jadilah pendengar setia dan penanya yang empatis.
Ketujuh, jujur dan terus terang. Ketika melakukan investigasi, kadang dilematis untuk berkata jujur dan terus terang maksud kita melakukan wawancara dengan sumber. Tapi sikap tersebut sangat bermanfaat untuk menghindari kesalahpahaman akibat pemberitaan.
Kedelapan, wawancara dari hati ke hati. Ciptakan suasana rileks namun mendengarkan dengan penuh perhatian.
Kesembilan, menulis kebenaran fakta yang diperoleh.

Akhirnya, perlu diingat bahwa melakukan investigasi adalah pekerjaan praktis. Maksudnya, kemampuan untuk itu tak bisa dijejalkan dengan teori. Pelatihan semacam ini hanyalah berfungsi menggugah atau malah sekadar menyentuh motivasi naluri jurnalistik. Hasil akhirnya hanya akan maksimal dicapai dengan cara mencoba-dan mencoba terus.

Gelombang Baru Neo-Liberalisme

Halusnya dan semakin sistematisnya pola penindasan rakyat hari ini semakin menuntut kita untuk dapat lebih mencerdasi penyelenggaraan struktur penindasan modal dan Negara yang tengah berlangsung semakin efektif hingga detik ini. Gagalnya transisi demokrasi paska Reformasi 98, ternyata juga berimplikasi terhadap memburuknya kenyataan mode produksi sosial ekonomi rakyat Indonesia. Meningkatnya angka kemiskinan, tingkat pengangguran, PHK massal ternyata malah dijawab dengan fenomena tingginya praktek-praktek liberalisasi, privatisasi dan deregulasi di semua sektor yang justru malah diamini oleh sekian instrumen kebijakan legal dari pemerintahan pusat sampai daerah hanya demi kepentingan segelintir kapitalis birokratik dan kepentingan ekspansi modal internasional di Indonesia. Ironisnya, kini dengan slogan pertumbuhan perekonomian Indonesia, pemerintah secara terang-terangan dan percaya diri justru mengundang investasi asing sebanyak-banyaknya masuk dan di sisi lain semakin memarjinalkan sektor kerakyatan serta menafikkan hak-hak warga negaranya sendiri.

Gagalnya Neoliberalisme untuk mewujudkan kesejahteraan dunia, semakin terlihat dengan rapuhnya perekonomian Amerika Serikat paska terjadinya Krisis Finansial yang berujung kemudian pada krisis global yang melanda negara-negara di belahan dunia lainnya. Gulung tikarnya beberapa perusahaan besar di AS secara otomatis melahirkan PHK massal di negara adidaya itu. Optimisme masyarakat AS dengan terpilihnya Obama sebagai Presiden AS ternyata justru mendorong konsolidasi negara-negara maju yang tergabung dalam G20 untuk mereformasi dan lebih memaksimalkan kembali peranan Bank Dunia, IMF dan ADB. Tragisnya, seharusnya destabilisasi perekonomian negara-negara maju ini bisa dijadikan momentum kebangkitan nasional guna merenegosiasi tatanan ekonomi kapitalistik yang menghisap sumber daya nasional sampai detik ini, namun yang terjadi Presiden SBY malah menyambut gembira ketika diundang sebagai peserta Pertemuan G20 di London guna memastikan adanya komitmen penjadwalan hutang baru bagi Indonesia. Dan posisi ketergantungan republik ini terhadap bantuan hutang luar negri semakin ditegaskan kembali dengan adanya Konferensi Tingkat Tinggi ADB di Nusa Dua Bali pada bulan mei yang lalu.

Sedari awal, kepentingan dan kebutuhan nasional juga tidak pernah dijadikan acuan bagi pemerintah selaku penyelenggara negara untuk membebaskan rakyat dari krisis yang tak kunjung reda ini. Pemerintah semakin menggambarkan posisinya sebagai institusi penjaga keberlangsungan modal dan semakin menjauhkan dirinya dari rakyat.

Belum lagi, pesta demokrasi pada Pemilu Legislatif yang lalu jelas-jelas memperlihatkan bobroknya sistem demokrasi di Negara ini. Demokrasi yang dijalankan saat ini terbukti hanya digunakan untuk mengakomodasi kepentingan elit semata karena demokrai yang berjalan sesungguhnya adalah demokrasi prosedural yang tidak berpijak kepada kepentingan rakyat banyak dan lebih ditujukan untuk memberikan keuntungan bagi segelintir orang (baca: oligarkisme negara). Persekongkolan negara dengan modal (koorporatisme negara) hanya akan memperpanjang cerita penindasan—penghisapan di Negeri ini.

Tragisnya, tanpa ada rasa malu, justru semua kandidat CAPRES dan CAWAPRES yang akan bermain pada Pilpers 2009 ini, masih berani mengatakan bahwa mereka anti terhadap neoliberalisme. Di tengah situasi yang anti rakyat dan ahistoris seperti ini, banyak kaum pergerakan justru tertidur dan mengalami degradasi yang cukup mengkhawatirkan. Bahkan tidak sedikit dari kaum pergerakan yang justru masuk dalam politik kekuasaan yang tidak berpijak pada kepentingan rakyat dan cita-cita pembebasan akan tetapi memakainya sebagai alat untuk masuk dalam jajaran kekuasaan. Hal ini jelas merupakan preseden buruk bagi perjuangan demokrasi rakyat. Sebagai golongan pembebas yang tidak mau terjebak dalam kondisi macam ini, Posisi Pergerekan dituntut untuk meneguhkan kepemimpinannya dalam perjuangan pembebasan hak-hak dasar rakyat yang selama ini menjadi korban dari bobroknya sistem di Republik ini.

CARA MEMBURU BERITA

PENGANTAR

Globalisasi di segala bidang membuat dunia ini semakin kecil. Sebelum teknologi komunikasi dan informasi berkembang canggih seperti sekarang, jarak menjadi kendala seseorang untuk menjalin komunikasi dengan orang lain. Dunia seolah-olah tersekat oleh batas-batas negara, berita-berita yang terjadi di suatu negara hanya dapat dinikmati oleh masyarakat di negara tersebut, baik melalui media cetak maupun elektronik (TV dan radio).

Seiring dengan berkembangnya peradaban manusia itu sendiri dan tuntutan masyarakat terhadap kebutuhan mereka, maka perubahan diberbagai bidang baik secara evolusiner maupun revolusioner tak dapat dihindari. Akibatnya seperti sekarang, kini semua telah berubah.Teknologi informasi dan komunikasi yang berhasil dikembangkan oleh pakar teknologi di negara-negara maju seperti Jepang, Amerika Serikat, Inggris dan Perancis memudahkan masyarakat untuk mengakses segala informasi yang mereka perlukan melalui internet, serta berhubungan dengan sahabat, keluarga atau teman yang jaraknya jauh melalui komunikasi mengunakan media telepon kabel, handphone atau melalui e-mail menggunakan media internet.

Inilah fenomena yang terjadi dalam masyarakat kita sakarang. Teknologi komunikasi dan Informasi yang canggih nampaknya menjadi agama baru mereka. Mereka rela berjam-jam mengakses informasi melalui internet, menjelejahi dunia maya yang sebelumnya tidak mereka bayangkan. Orang semakin mudah menikmati hiburan, maupun peristiwa yang terjadi di negara lain melalui televisi. Masyarakat akan semakin sadar informasi bahkan menganggap informasi sebagai kebutuhan pokok (basic need). Gagap informasi,
khususnya dikalangan akademisi, cendekiawan kampus, maupun mahasiswa dianggap merupakan hal yang memalukan dan tidak lazim.

Dalam konteks transformasi informasi di tanah air, menunjukkan bahwa kompetisi media massa semakin kompetitif. Inilah dampak globalisasi informasi dan teknologi tersebut. Gejala ini muncul sejak rezim Soeharto tumbang oleh gerakan mahasiswa pada 21 Mei 1998 lalu.

KEBEBASAN MEMPEROLEH INFORMASI

Dalam konstitusi kita, setiap warga negara dijamin kebebasannya untuk berserikat, berkumpul, mengeluarkan pendapat secara lesan maupun tulisan. Dalam pasal 19 Declaration of Human Rights (Freedom of communication, Freedom of information) tahun 1949 yang dikeluarkan PBB juga disebutkan bahwa kebebasan untuk mengeluarkan pendapat dan memperoleh informasi merupakan Hak Asasi Manusia (HAM).

Tidak ada seorangpun yang mampu menghalangi atau melarang seseorang/lembaga untuk berbicara dan mendapatkan informasi. Termasuk negara (state) juga tak punya hak untuk melarangnya. Meski demikian, ada saja pihak –pihak yang sengaja secara sistematis berusaha membungkam masyarakat agar mereka tuli (sengaja ditulikan) oleh informasi yang disajikan pers. ‘Peperangan’ antara pihak-pihak yang tidak menginginkan kebebasan bersuara dengan pihak-pihak yang menginginkan kebebasan nampaknya akan terus abadi hingga akhir jaman.

Apa yang disampaikan oleh Sekjen PBB Kofi Annan menguatkan sinyalemen terhadap pihak-pihak yang ingin membungkam kebebasan bersuara ini. Berikut kutipan pernyataan Kofi Annan dalam seminar bertema “The Media and Government in Search of Solutions” yang diselenggarakan pada 23 –24 Maret di Jakarta.
“Akan selalu ada pihak-pihak yang mempertanyakan nilai kebebasan berbicara di dalam masyarakat mereka sendiri. Yakni mereka yang memberikan alasan bahwa kebebasan berbicara itu akan mengganggu stabilitas dan membahayakan kemajuan. Mereka yang menganggap kebebasan berbicara sebagai bahaya dari luar dan bukannnya suatu pengungkapan setiap orang untuk mendapatkan kemerdekaan.

Yang selalu jelas tampak dalam argumen di atas ini adalah bahwa anggapan tersebut tidak pernah dianut oleh rakyat itu sendiri. Melainkan oleh pemerintahan dan sekali lagi saya tekankan oleh pemerintahan, tidak pernah alasan itu dikemukakan oleh mereka yang lemah melainkan oleh merka yang berkuasa. Tidak pernah disuarakan oleh mereka yang tidak pernah bersuara tetapi oleh mereka yang suara lantangnya bisa didengar.

Sebaiknya kita akhiri perdebatan ini untuk selama-lamanya atas satu-satunya ujian yang sudah terbukti yakni pilihan bagi setiap orang untuk mengetahui lebih banyak atau lebih sedikit, untuk didengar atau didiamkan saja. BERBURU INFORMASI YANG BENAR

Menjadi tugas setiap wartawan maupun pers mahasiswa untuk mencari berita yang benar. Berita yang benar adalah informasi yang sesuai dengan realitas yang terjadi. Tidak direkayasa atau dimanipulasi untuk kepentingan lembaga pers itu sendiri, wartawan, nara sumber atau pihak-pihak tertentu. Menyajikan berita yang penuh rekayasa jauh dari kebenaran berarti membohongi masyarakat.

Jika hal buruk ini dilakukan oleh insan pers yang sering dianggap sebagai agen perubahan, maka mereka ikut berdosa melakukan pembodohan terhadap masyarakat. Ingatlah bahwa pers merupakan sub sistem dari sistem kemasyarakat, pers tidak bisa hidup sendiri tanpa masyarakat. Ada sebuah pendapat menarik bahwa pers merupakan potret masyarakat. Jika pers buruk, membohongi masyarakat maka realitasnya yang terjadi dalam masyarakat akan demikian juga. Sebaliknya jika masyarakat baik maka pers pun juga akan baik.

Kebenaran (truth) hendaknya dijadikan pedoman bagi pelaku pers nasional maupun pers mahasiswa untuk mencari berita dan menyajikan berita yang benar. Meskipun dalam realitasnya banyak pelaku pers yang memperjualbelikan kebenaran berita dengan imbalan materi. Memang hal ini tak dapat dihindari karena orientasi pers telah berubah dari pers perjuangan yang memperjuangkan idelalismenya untuk kemerdekaan negara menjadi pers industri. Idealisme pers menjadi luntur karena yang diperjuangkan bukan semata-mata kepentingan rakyat namun kepentingan pemilik modal, kepentingan diri sendiri dan sumber-sumber berita yang suka melakukan konspirasi dengan wartawan untuk memanipulasi kebenaran.

Berita yang benar juga diartikan sebagai berita yang obyektif, tidak memihak. Persiapkan peralatan wawancara seperti tape recorder, baterai, kaset rekam, pulpen dan buku catatan.

It was juts a hope. I could do what I want to do without any saying of cross guide. I could see the life that I belong to him, without any hand of pretender help. I could say a free word of conscious winning on the widely light evening and running around the readable thought without any blur confusedness of invisible world.

When I was standing on a wild field, the star with its light stared at me. I took my feet a yard to front, the light followed with the wonder. I turned left and back again it kept staring at me. I look at the light, and then, anything seemed blurring. I did not know what was happened. In fact, I have been waked up from my sleep.

Then, the door was knocked. Some one has said “hello” behind the door. What was then? Two people came into my room, my mother and a doctor. “Is there something wrong?” I thought. Where I have been? I was in my home. But why there is doctor here? Or an accident happened to me. It seems looked. But I felt that there is nothing wrong with me. The doctor said something to my mother, and then, looked at me and examined my body. Finding something, he then told an unclear sentence to my mother. Then, the two people went from my room out.

Lying on a bed alone, my mind was flying to wide sky wandering the wild dark dirty jungle to get the light. The light showed itself, but it is different. It is not that I hope. I turned around and saw the light in a long distance. I went to him. How I was surprised, that I was entering a desert. I did not know where it was. It is full of light. I walked by feet on the desert for long time. My sweat was going out from my body, and I felt so thirsty. I looked around for looking water. But what I have seen is a barren land, which is full of sand in any place. Slowly, I got my feet walking on the sand, slowly, slowly and very slowly. Finally, I fell down to the sand. I had no strength to be standing by. On heavy eyes, I saw water a few yards in front of me. I tried to get it, but I could not move my hand. No word that I could say. All parts of my body were a weary pound. I could not see even a little bit light. Then anything is dark and pitch black.

A shaft of light came to me, a candlelight that was standing over a grave. The grave was under a very dense tree, between many graves on the resting place. What it was been? How can I be on the graves covered by frosty dibble darkness? I afraid fully was directed to the candlelight that was being the brightness light on the wide darkness. A raven was flying above me uttering horrifying sounds. I kept turned on the light. I was exactly standing near the candlelight that was on the gravestone. It is indeed queer so. How can a burned candle be on the dark quiet grave? But I did not hear it. I took the candle, and looked at to the gravestone. I clean the dusty gravestone and read the note on it. How startled I was, it is written by my name with a note “on a best memorial”. It was my grave. Suddenly, a gloomy ghost was staying behind me. I screamed and ran as fast as I can. The candle calmed and fell on the ground. I felt that the ghost was still following me. And I kept running till unfortunately my feet did not stand on the ground. I was flying down to the hollow deep hole.

Snapped, I was laying on the bed. My body is full of sweat. But I felt so cold. I looked at to the window of my room. It was opened. The bulbul sounded “to with to who” on the far tree that I could see. The moon was still on his place above the thick leaves tree that was standing high facing to the heaven. His round bright light entered my room through the window. A cold wind penetrated the cracks in the wall. A shadow was flying around the moon when I enjoyed looking the moonlight. “Is that the ghost who chased after me in my dream?” I thought, “How he could be here?” Suddenly, the shadow moved around so fast, then he direct to me like an arrow. He came in my room and blocked my sight way. The shadow filled my room with the darkness and press down my body. I could do anything. My body was cramp, and I was difficult to breath. I screamed as strong as I can with all of the remained sound. “If there is no one can hear my voices, may be it is the end of my day”, I felt on afraid. I screamed and screamed. Then the door was opened.

My mother came into my room and opened the window. It was morning when the sun shows its face. All of my body was tired and weak. I felt so thirsty and hungry. I asked my mother to take me a glass of water and some food. She gave the water on my lips and fed me the food. “What day is today mom? And what was happened to me?” I asked to my mother. “Today is Sunday, and you have been sleeping for three days since Friday”, she explained. “You are faint after you fall down from your motorbike, and now, you have just woke up”, she added. I was amazed. I have been unconscious for three days and my mind was wandering to unknown and unidentified world. As though, a soul has guided my hand like a blind person and I have acted out of my control. I was longing the light that is not going to be true. I felt as though I was a converter who looking for a cane for my walking. I was an old man that is learning to be adult. I was really unconscious.

Then, someone knocked the door and my mom walked to open it. It was a doctor behind the door. Now, I knew why he comes to my room. I do not know for many times he had came to my house when I was unconscious. He entered my room and examined me. I was still lying on the bed because I was so weak to wake up. He said that I had been going to be healed. After finish, he meant to go back, but before he came out from he said “for the next time when you intend to run your bike fast on the crowd of traffic, you are better to think for two times”.

Human life is a kind of phases. Through the phases, human tries to find his own identity. During the phases, he gets him self into question, including what he is and what he should do in human interaction.

The questions on human’s mind then lead them into many ways of interactions and behaviors. Because the human is tied by the social construction, where they live, then there are different behaviors and attitudes of the human because of the different responses of these social constructions. And then it is called personality, human personality.

These phases of human life is that lead into many conflicts of human life, on each phase of human phases of life. And the deepest pain of conflict of human phases is that in adolescent phases, because adolescence is the transition age from childhood into adulthood.

The conflict, the identity crisis that happens in the adolescence age is the most important conflict human being found than any conflicts in other stages of life, because it will determine the human in facing the future. So it is why the role confusion that happens during teenagers is felt as the more painfully age.

Literature, as the one of the product of human, then also represents this human behaviors and interactions with all the conflicts within. It is almost similar with that Dryden (in Siswontoro, 2005:51) stated:

The function of literature is to provide a just and lively image of human nature or at least who agree on the general proposition that the end of literature is some kind of illumination of the human situation. (Daiches, 1981:328)

Fiction, or specifically novel, is one kind of literary work that almost completely records or restructures the human condition in imaginative and creative forms. As Siswontoro state (2005:29) that social realty, psychological realty or even religious realty are kind of terms often we heard when people talk about novel as life realty. It means that some phenomena that are found on a novel could be found on a real life. Whether it is a social phenomenon or psychological or other is depended to the reader as its audience or responder.

Further, the phenomena that are found on a literary works are then used as philosophical reference of the research. It is as that Siswontoro (2005:8) states:

In spite of this, the literature itself must something that could captivate the reader to read and understand it. And as the requirement of this, the literature must have aesthetics values and also must be structured with an aesthetic purpose. And the other one is that the literature must have a recognizable relation with the life, although the relation here is in various ways. It is as Wellek and Warren state:

Literature must always be interesting; it must always have a structure and an aesthetic purpose, a total coherence and effect. It must, of course, stand in recognizable relation to life, but the relation: the life can be heightened or burlesqued or antithesized; it is in any case a selection, of a specifically purposive sort, from life. We have to have knowledge independent of literature in order to know what the specific relation of a specific work to ‘life’ may be”, (1977:212).

As the explanation above, after reading The Catcher in the Rye, a novel of J.D. Salinger, the researcher found that it is interesting to take this novel into a scientific discussion. This novel, with the psychological phenomena within, talking about the personality of the main character “Holden Caulfield”, give us an explanation how when a teenager live between childhood world and adulthood that then leads to the psychological conflict of mind.

J.D. Salinger, his self, is an American novelist that was born in New York City on the first day of 1919 from Jewish Father and Christian Mother. After brief periods of enrolment at both NYU and Columbia University, Salinger devoted himself entirely to writing, and by 1940 he had published several short stories in periodicals (http://www.gradesaver.com/23/12/2006).

The novel, The Catcher in the Rye, is first published in United Stated in 1951. And since it was published it remains the controversial to this day. According to the American Library Association, it was the 13^th most frequently challenged book of the 1990s. The novel also is one of the famous literary works of the 20^th century, and a common part of high-school curricula across the United States and Canada. (www.wikipedia.com).

The Catcher in the Rye is novel talking about a teenager, in this case is Holden Caulfield, the main character in the novel, that live in confusing because he lives between two world that absolutely different both of them. The first world is the child world that he catches it as the innocence and the pure world, a world that talks and shows anything as how the anything is. The second world is the adult world that he regards it as the phony world. Adulthood, according to him, is a world that full of pretender and the people that could not act as they are. The adulthood is the world that full of crime, vulgarity and another amuse thing. And even he thinks that he is the phoniest one. Living between childhood and adulthood with all of the confusion, role confusion, finally bring him into the inner turbulence of his mind.

The role confusion that he felt may be the cause of his loneliness and lonesome that he felt during his psychological conflict. The role confusion that makes him in his psychological conflict is then to be something interested to be discussed through the aesthetic values of the novel, The Catcher in the Rye.

Based on all the explanation above, here, the researcher is interesting to take this novel as object of the research. Because, according to the researcher, this novel will give something valuable for the researcher especially, and for the people in general.

The research or the discussion about psychological phenomena of the novel is not to judge the novel as a good or bad novel fiction. But more of that, the researcher is meant to find, define, classify and evaluate the literary work whether the novel has some values that could be used as a model in living in this world, in living in the human world. It is that the human take a prize from what M.H. Abrams state about criticism in literature that “criticism is study concerned on with defining, classifying, analyzing and evaluating works of literature”, (1981:35).

This research, further, is to capture the humanistic values of the novel through the psychological phenomena, which the researcher has explained about it, as something could happen to us as a human, or people in common who feel that they are human.

To capture and explain the psychological phenomena that are found in the novel The Catcher in the Rye, the researcher uses the theory of psychology of Erik Homburger Erikson as the theoretical approach, because the researcher thinks that it is the appropriate to use after regarding the object that is going to be investigated.
